Abstract

Fiber-reinforced plastics bear a huge potential for lightweight design, espe-cially due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and anisotropic behavior. Within topology optimization, due to the high number of dependent variables, specific solutions for transversely isotropic materials rarely exist – and existing ones require considerable computational effort. Yet, to fully exploit the light-weight potential, taking anisotropy into account is indispensable. A new bionic topology optimization approach is presented to facilitate efficient and effective optimization of such materials.
