Abstract

This study explores effective interaction protocols between designer and user in the design process, and it asks two research questions. First, how the designer-user interaction can take the two protocols and make their interactions in creating design outcomes in the design process? Second, which protocol is more effective in a certain design stage in generating better designer-user interaction in the design process? To address these, I adopt dramaturgy as a theoretical foundation and synthesize two designer-user interaction protocols: 1) user-invited protocoland 2) co-creation protocol. Based on this, I conducted a pilot study, using a laboratory experiment and summarized an initial finding. Throughout this protocol study, I provide theoretical and methodological guidelines of how latent designer-user interactions could build reliable design outcomes in the design protocols.
